Every July, South Africans are reminded that honouring Nelson Mandela’s legacy isn’t about grand gestures.It’s about choosing to make a difference where we can. At Sanctuary Mandela, our luxury boutique hotel in Houghton, Johannesburg, that belief shapes far more than the guest experience. While visitors come to enjoy luxury accommodation, heritage and five-star hospitality, they also become part of a home that continues to carry Madiba’s values forward through meaningful acts of service.
Sometimes that difference looks like 67 minutes of service.
Sometimes it looks like volunteering your time.
And sometimes, it begins with something as simple as placing a pack of sanitary pads into a donation box.
Throughout Mandela month, that’s exactly what hundreds of people chose to do.
Guests arrived carrying shopping bags alongside their overnight luggage. Members of our team quietly added to the growing collection each week. Visitors who had come for coffee, lunch or a Heritage House Tour paused to contribute. Others who couldn’t bring products chose instead to make a monetary donation.
Each contribution was different. Each one mattered.
Together, our Sanctuary Mandela community collected 703 packs of sanitary pads throughout Mandela Month. Guests also donated R902, with Sanctuary Mandela contributing the remaining amount needed to provide 67 young girls with a full year’s supply of sanitary products.
This Women’s month, those donations reached the young women they were intended for.
While the numbers tell one story, they don’t tell the whole story. Because period poverty has never simply been about sanitary products.
It is about confidence.
It is about dignity.
It is about the ability to attend school every day without unnecessary barriers standing in the way of learning.
It is about ensuring that a young girl never has to choose between her education and something she cannot control.
These are the kinds of quiet challenges Nelson Mandela believed a just society should work tirelessly to overcome.
Throughout his life, Madiba reminded us that freedom and dignity must belong to everyone. He also believed deeply in the potential of young people, understanding that investing in the next generation was one of the greatest responsibilities any society could undertake.
This initiative is one small way we continue to carry those values forward.

For us, those words have always meant more than hospitality.
Whether someone joins us for luxury accommodation in Johannesburg, a Heritage House Tour, seasonal dining or one of our curated boutique hotel experiences, our hope is that they leave having experienced something deeper than comfort alone.
They speak to the kind of home Madiba believed South Africa could be. A place where we look after one another. Where compassion is put into action. Where small acts of generosity ripple far beyond the moment they are given.
This year’s drive may have come to an end, but its impact is only just beginning.
The girls who received these donations will carry something far greater than sanitary products into the months ahead. They will carry the knowledge that a community they may never meet chose to stand beside them. And perhaps that is the most fitting way to honour Nelson Mandela’s legacy.
Not by asking what one person can do, but by remembering what becomes possible when hundreds of people each choose to do one small thing.
