Every year, Mandela Day reminds us to reflect on how we can carry forward Nelson Mandela’s spirit of service, compassion, and dignity. At Sanctuary Mandela, the former home of Nelson Mandela and now a beautiful boutique hotel and heritage site, we have the privilege of being part of something truly meaningful and we invite you to join us.

Last year, our team set a goal: to collect 402 packs of sanitary pads, enough to help 67 girls at a local primary school stay in school with dignity for six months. Inspired by Mandela’s legacy, we wanted to give these young girls the confidence to attend school without worry or shame.

What happened next was beyond anything we imagined. Our staff, guests, and incredible community came together in the most heartwarming way. Instead of just meeting the goal, we collected over 1200 packs of sanitary pads, more than triple what we had hoped for. Thanks to this overwhelming generosity, we were able to help all 78 girls at the school, giving them pads for 16 months. That’s more than a year and a half of school days without worry, and it was all because of you.

That experience reminded us just how powerful it is when people unite in kindness. Every pack of pads carried a message of hope and reminded those girls that their dreams matter and that they are not alone.

This year, we are excited to do it all over again and to make an even bigger impact. The former home of Nelson Mandela is more than just a beautiful space. It is a living reminder of what one person’s vision of dignity and equality can inspire in all of us. We believe we can honor that legacy again this year by surpassing even last year’s incredible achievement.

We invite you to join us in donating sanitary pads at Sanctuary Mandela throughout #MandelaMonth, the month of July. Let’s continue changing lives and proving, together, that kindness really can change the world, one pack at a time.
