There are certain evenings that are less about dining, and more about presence.
On 12 May, Sanctuary Mandela hosts an intimate winemaker dinner in Johannesburg, bringing together a small group of guests for a one-night-only encounter with wine, heritage, and craftsmanship.
The Setting at Sanctuary Mandela
Sanctuary Mandela is not simply a venue, it is a space that holds memory. Within the walls of his former home, moments of reflection and decision once unfolded quietly.
For one evening, this setting becomes the backdrop to a shared table. Not a restaurant environment, but a more considered, intimate space where conversation is unhurried and the atmosphere carries a sense of depth.
The Winemaker Dinner Experience
Hosted in partnership with Morgenster Estate, the evening centres around a guided tasting of the estate’s wine collection, presented by the winemaker himself.
Each wine is paired with a considered four-course menu, designed to complement the character and structure of the wines. The experience is designed to unfold slowly, allowing time for insight, conversation, and connection around the table.
With only 20 seats available, the evening remains deliberately small.

Meet the Winemaker, Matthew Andersen
At the heart of the evening is Matthew Andersen, winemaker at Morgenster Estate.
His philosophy is grounded in restraint, allowing the vine and the grape to guide the process, rather than imposing on it. It is an approach shaped by both experience and respect for the craft.
Before joining Morgenster, Andersen completed multiple harvests at Thelema and Stellenzicht, and further refined his perspective through time spent in France and the United States. These experiences inform a style that balances tradition with a quiet, contemporary precision.
On the evening, he will present each wine personally, offering insight into the process, the decisions behind each vintage, and the story behind the estate’s evolving identity.
About Morgenster Estate
At the foothills of the Helderberg Mountains in Somerset West lies Morgenster Estate, a place where heritage and innovation meet.
Known for its Bordeaux-style wines and Italian-influenced approach, the estate was shaped by founder Giulio Bertrand, whose vision brought together African terroir and European sensibility.
Today, Morgenster continues to evolve into a new era, defined by sustainability, craftsmanship, and a commitment to producing world-class wines and extra virgin olive oils.
This evening marks part of that journey, offering guests a chance to experience the estate’s wines in a more personal and considered setting.
